Simple storytime language games to try at home

A finished story can become a small language game. These ideas are short, flexible, and meant to fit ordinary family conversation.

Retell one moment

Ask the child to remember one thing that happened first, next, or last. The point is not perfect recall; it is taking turns putting a story moment into words.

Make a new either-or choice

Offer two playful choices that fit the story world. Would the truck visit a bridge or a tunnel next? Would the owl look for a red feather or a blue feather?

Name feelings and details

Ask what a character might have felt, which sound was funny, or what color appeared in a scene. Small observations help a child revisit a story in their own way.

No. One small question after a story is enough. Follow the child’s interest and stop while it is still enjoyable.
