How to talk about AI with young kids

Young children do not need a technical lecture about artificial intelligence. They can understand a simple idea: some tools use computers to respond, and parents help choose when and how to use them.

Use plain language

You might say, this story tool uses a computer voice to help tell a story, but our family is still in charge. A child can understand that a grown-up chooses the app and can stop it.

Keep real life at the center

AI tools do not replace family conversations, caregivers, teachers, or friends. Use the story as a prompt for talking, playing, drawing, or reading together afterward.

Model healthy boundaries

Show children that technology has starts and stops. Choose an activity, enjoy it, and then move to something else without treating a device as the only source of fun.

Parent questions

Should a child use AI alone?

Parents can decide what level of participation and supervision is right for their household and the specific product.
